Do You Need a Hire Car on Norfolk Island?

Rachel Wills • November 1, 2026

Planning a holiday to Norfolk Island? One of the first questions you might find yourself asking is whether you'll need to hire a car while you're here.

The short answer? Yes, we'd definitely recommend it!

Norfolk Island might be small, but there's plenty to see and do, and having your own wheels is one of the best ways to make the most of your time here.

The good news? When you stay at Trade Winds Country Cottages, your hire car is already taken care of!

How big is Norfolk Island?

Norfolk Island is approximately 8 kilometres long and 5 kilometres wide, so you might think getting around on foot would be easy enough. While you can certainly enjoy a lovely walk around parts of the island, many of our favourite spots are spread out.

From the beautiful beaches and historic Kingston area to scenic lookouts, walking trails, cafés and local attractions, you'll want the freedom to explore beyond your accommodation.

Is there public transport on Norfolk Island?

Unlike many holiday destinations, Norfolk Island doesn't have a regular public bus service.

There are guided tours and some transport services available, but if you'd like to explore independently, having a hire car makes life much easier.

You won't need to plan your day around transport schedules or worry about how you're going to get back after dinner. Instead, you can head out whenever you like, stay as long as you please and change your plans along the way.

What's driving on Norfolk Island like?

Driving on Norfolk Island is a little different from driving on the mainland, and that's part of the charm!

Here are a few things worth knowing before you arrive:

  • We drive on the left, just like in Australia.
  • The speed limit is generally 50 km/h, with lower limits in some areas.
  • Cows have right of way! You'll often see cattle wandering freely along the roads, so take your time and keep an eye out.
  • There are no traffic lights, and traffic jams aren't something you'll need to worry about.
  • The Norfolk wave is a thing! Don't be surprised when other drivers give you a friendly wave as you pass. It's a lovely little island tradition.

The roads can be narrow and winding in places, but there's no need to rush. In fact, slowing down is part of what makes a Norfolk Island holiday so enjoyable.

Why having a hire car makes your holiday better

One of the best things about Norfolk Island is the freedom to explore at your own pace.

With your own car, you can:

  • Discover somewhere new every day. Head out to explore a different beach, walking trail or historic site without needing to organise transport.
  • Stop whenever something catches your eye. Spotted a beautiful view? Pull over safely and enjoy it. Found a little roadside stall? Stop and have a look.
  • Make the most of your mornings and evenings. Whether you're heading out for an early morning walk, grabbing a coffee or finding the perfect spot to watch the sunset, you can come and go as you please.
  • Explore without a strict itinerary. Some of the best Norfolk Island experiences happen when you take a wrong turn, follow an interesting road or decide to see what's around the next corner.

And because nowhere is particularly far away, you can always pop back to your cottage for a break before heading out again.
